Project 2: Artist’s Statement

Project 2: Artist’s Statement

My artworks are generally influenced and inspired by classical music because of my previous music background. Playing music is one way for me to tell rich stories with emotions. Classical music notes are written on the music sheets by composers which remain constant; however by projecting personal interpretation and feelings, each musician makes the music unique, meaningful, and profound. Correspondently when I create works of art, I express personal thoughts using visual arts as the medium. Recently, I have been pondering on the art which exists in the ordinary, but is in fact extraordinary. I believe that human beings have less emotion towards ordinary things, like the daily objects and landscapes around us. These things are in some sense empty, blank, and neutral. They are thus available for viewers to project their own interpretation and create new perception.I believe these personal perspectives make art richer and more thoughtful to the artist and the viewers.

In this particular project, I am focusing on the idea of landscapes. Nowadays, people can easily search and see different landscape images on the internet, which are all stored in digital format. Therefore, these landscape photos are often taken and seen in a sharp image quality that exist in a certain cold, consistent, and square space on the monitor. Thus for most people, viewing landscape is eye catching but emotionless in most of the case. However, if we recall the memory of traveling and viewing landscapes in nature, the aesthetic changes completely. In our memory, the scene in our mind is not just square photos popped out one by one like a slide show. Instead, we remember the content and the context of the place, like the weather, the air, the light, the smell of that day. We also remember the people, the sound, the emotions, and the stories we made while traveling in that particular place. All of these fragments of memories then form and layer out as an abstract scene like a personal landscape stored in our unique mind. Inspired by all the ideas stated above, in this project I would like to combine all the essence of my own memories when viewing landscapes and present viewers with the personal aspect of ordinary things. How would you feel and react to the reconstructed landscapes that exist in the memories?
